In general, companies seek certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) with the aim of holding themselves to a higher standard of environmental responsibility. Both organizations work to identify forest products as coming from socially and environmentally responsible forest producers using well-managed, sustainable forest lands.

To gain FSC and SFI certification, an organization must be able to prove that its products are traceable to sustainably managed forests. To do this, they must establish approved documentation, tracking, and training procedures audited by an independent third party.
